Coverage contribution

The margin is a number that tells you how much money you have left after the direct selling costs of selling on Amazon. It is therefore an expression of how profitable it can be for you to sell your goods on Amazon's marketplaces.

Contribution margin = Sales price – (Purchase price + Amazon's costs)

N.B. The calculator does not take into account the cost of shipping to Amazon's FBA centers.

Referal fee

Amazon takes a cut of all sales on their platform in commission. The size of the cut depends on the price and category of the product.

Storage costs

When using one of Amazon’s Fulfilment Centers, you will pay for each square meter of storage space that your products take up. Storage costs differ depending on the season with cheaper rates between January and September and peak rates between October and December. The estimated storage costs in our model depend on your chosen “Product Size”.

Delivery costs

Depending on the size and weight of the product, Amazon will charge a fee to ship your products to customers.

VAT (Value Added Tax)

The equivalent of ‘moms’ outside Denmark. If you are selling products abroad as a Danish seller it is strongly recommended that you get a VAT number in all countries, where you have customers, as the VAT is often lower outside Denmark. Without the foreign VAT number, you are liable to pay Danish VAT ‘moms’ (25%).

Returns

The advantage of using Amazon’s FBA service is that Amazon takes care of return orders. As the seller, all you need to do is pay a fee, and the rest is sorted.

  • The cost estimate is based on the currency of your chosen country.
  • The model provides an estimate of the costs associated with sales through FBA.
  • Prices were last updated in March 2021.
  • The model is only based on national sales from each Fulfillment center.
  • Costs associated with storing products in one of Amazon’s Fulfillment Centers are calculated based on monthly rates and the storage volume required for each product.
  • As Amazon uses seasonal prices, our model is based on a weighted average of rates during one full year. To get a personalized estimate of costs associated with sales through FBA, do not hesitate to contact us.   • Please contact us if your product is larger than 120 x 60 x 60 cm to get a precise estimate of your storage costs.
  • You are required to have a VAT number in your chosen country to pay local VAT. Otherwise, you will be liable to pay Danish VAT.
  • Costs associated with returns are industry specific and therefore not included in the model.
  • The model does not account for costs associated with shipping products to Amazon’s Fulfillment Center.

  • For the USA and Japan, the figures approximate the real FBA costs, since they use very different size categories in relation to EU countries, therefore the FBA and storage figures for the USA and Japan are less accurate than for EU countries.
